Narrow Gauge Now, Portland College, Mansfield, 26 October 2024

On Friday October 25, my brother and I were aboard the Rotterdam-Hull night ferry to visit the show arranged by the East Midlands Narrow Gauge Modellers Group. The next morning we drove to Mansfield and found over 30 excellent narrow gauge layouts in scales between 009 and 0-16.5. I had brought a box of rolling stock which Stuart Taylor, the 009 News Editor, allowed on his layout Melin Dolrhyd. Apart from a few models' coarse flanges hitting the ballast on his code 40 track, all went well. That's what you get for using ancient chassis on your layout...

Even though I couldn't see everything there was to be seen, less so photograph it, I managed to talk to a number of fellow modellers and take a number of photos. In addition I discussed the problems of bringing a layout across to the UK for exhibition purposes, due to Customs restrictions. This may be followed up at some future stage.

The next day, Sunday, we went to York for a visit to the National Railway Museum. Regrettably part of the collection is in storage, as the Museum is undergoing and extensive improvement programme. Even so, there was much to be seen.

Below is a small selection of photos, the remainder can be seen in the two albums.

Narrow gauge model railway show, Katwijk-Leiden steam railway (Valkenburg), 31 Augustus / 1 September 2024

A hot summer weekend, and the Dutch 009 Group was present at the show with three model railways, two of which were built by the late Jan van Mourik, and one was the Rotbacherwaldbahn by the late Don Sibley, which I exhibited with Don exactly a year ago shortly before he suddenly passed away. Jan's layout Uivernest had been cleaned and made presentable by myself, and Jan's final project (Mouburgh-Haenrade, an airfield diorama with a narrow gauge train running along the edge) was completed by Ronald Visser and Henk Wust.

We exhibited these layouts to commemorate two highly respected modeller friends. The Rotbacherwaldbahn will soon be given a new home by an enthusiast in Dresden.

Able assistance was given by Lucien Eijdems, Michel van Peenen, my brother Marcel and by our friend Harry Mantheakis from the UK, who had come over with Sven van der Hart of Tramfabriek fame.

Marco Balk showed his new model railway '1923 Port Macarthur', a Scottish theme built together with Job Weessies. In addition there were many excellent contributions from here and abroad. The photos in the album are still without captions as I will be going on holiday tomorrow.

Below is a short selection of photos, the entire collection can be viewed in the album.

Following a long interval, on July 27th several Dutch Group members met at Lucien Eijdems' house: Hans Kamps, Peter Duijve, Ted Polet, Marco Balk, Jaap Stuurman, Michel van Peenen and Daan Biessels. Daan had brought his tiny Ile de St Ivre layout and Lucien had set up his Nahmertal Kleinbahn and a test track for analogue models.

Below is a short selection of photos, the entire collection can be viewed in the album.
